Cannabis 101: A Glossary of Cannabis Terms

Cannabis 101: A Glossary of Cannabis Terms

Posted by DaySavers Team on Apr 22nd 2022

Cannabis has come a long way, not only as an industry but also as a culture. Along with the culture of cannabis comes the language surrounding it. From the technical language to an endless list of slang terms, it can be overwhelming. These days, it can be intimidating walking into a dispensary as a first timer and not knowing your terminology. That’s why we’re here to help!

Below you’ll find an all-encompassing glossary of smoking terms surrounding cannabis. From A-Z and 420-710, we have answers to help guide you on your cannabis journey!

420

Back in the 1970s, a group of Californian teenagers would ritualistically consume cannabis every day at 4:20 pm after school. The ritual spread like wildfire, and eventually, 420 became the code for smoking weed. Somewhere along the way, 420 became 4/20, and thus, the day of celebration was born. Nowadays, 420 is synonymous with anything related to cannabis.

710

A newer stoner holiday, the term “710” arose with the popularity of cannabis concentrates. Spelling OIL upside down, 710 has become synonymous with dabbing in the last several years. In a similar fashion to 4/20, cannabis consumers took it upon themselves to create another holiday. July 10th, or 7/10, is a day meant to celebrate cannabis concentrates and the rising culture of dabbing.

Acapulco Gold

Acapulco Gold strain is a rare landrace sativa strain, meaning it grew naturally where it was found. Now one of the most well-known strains in existence, it’s become increasingly difficult to find in a pure form. Coming from an area in and around Acapulco, Mexico, this strain might produce high-octane effects that are energizing and motivational.

AK-47

AK-47, also known as “AK,” is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain that brings together Colombian, Mexican, Afghani, and Thai varieties. One hit of this illustrious strain might deliver a long-lasting cerebral buzz that promotes alertness and creativity. It's known for its diverse terpene profile that showcases sour, sweet, earthy, and floral notes.

Alaskan Thunderfuck

Alaskan Thunderfuck, aka ATF, is another legendary sativa-dominant strain. It is said to have originated from crossing Northern California sativa with a Russian ruderalis, and then an Afghani plant along the way. The buds are huge, frosty, and reeks of pine, skunk, lemon, and menthol. A few hits of this strain might produce an intensely euphoric high that tapers off into body-numbing relaxation.

Baggies

A colloquial term for plastic bags, this word typically refers to a bag of cannabis. In the traditional “black market” days, this is what you’d usually be getting your cannabis in. Ex: “How many baggies did you buy this week?”

Baked

Classic term for when you’re high off some good weed. After you’ve gotten firmly locked into your couch, it’s safe to say you’re baked like a cake!

BHO

BHO refers to a type of cannabis concentrate that is made using butane as a solvent. Also known as “Butane Honey Oil,” this type of concentrate is rich in cannabinoids and terpenes. The solvent removes all plant material during the extraction process to give you pure, delicious resin for dabbing.

Blasted

Blasted is another term for when you’re high out of your mind. When someone is staring off into space after a big hit of weed or a fresh dab, they might be blasted. This term is reserved for the highest of the high in any room.

Blunt

One of the oldest methods of smoking weed is a blunt. This term describes using a tobacco-based wrap to roll up your weed. Swishers, Backwoods, and Dutch’s are all classic cigars used as blunt wraps. Thanks to the health risks we now know are associated with tobacco use, blunts have morphed into something else. Nowadays you can roll blunts with hemp, cocoa, hibiscus, goji berry, sage, and even palm leaves to get the same slow burn without the harmful long-term effects of tobacco.

Blunt Wrap

As described above, a blunt is the marriage of weed and a tobacco wrap or leaf, traditionally. A blunt wrap is what you pack the weed into. Cigars like Swishers and Backwoods are typically gutted and then refilled with weed to be used as a wrap. Using tobacco-less wraps such as hemp, cocoa, hibiscus, goji berry, sage, and even palm leaves have only recently come into popularity as healthier alternatives.

Bong

When it comes to smoking apparatuses, bongs are one of the most simple and effective inventions. Bongs can be made from glass, metal, silicon, or even plastic. Typically, they involve a tubular chamber and a downstem that holds your bowl piece. Add water to filter the smoke, light your bowl, and inhale from the mouthpiece. When you’ve gotten enough smoke in the chamber, remove the bowl and continue to inhale to clear the chamber of smoke. Bongs can get gross and gunked up with resin, so make sure to change out the water regularly and give it a good clean every now and then! We recommend using isopropyl alcohol and salt for the best results.

Booty

Slang term for the end of a bowl of weed. The last hit is the one that no one wants to take. When a bowl is done, it should all be ash with no crunch left in it when you press on it. If a crunch remains, you can smoke it, but it will taste like ass. Thus, the term “booty” arose. EX: “Do you want to his this? It’s booty at this point, but there might be something left.”

Bowl

The receptacle for your weed before you smoke it. A bowl can be in reference to the bowl of a pipe or bubbler, or the bowl piece needed to smoke out of a bong. The bowl of your pipe is where you load your weed to then light up. The same can be said of a bong, though for a bong it is a piece separate from the bong itself. The bowl while on a pipe or bubbler is attached and does not come off. Obviously named for its shape, this is also a general term for having a smoke session. Ex: “Want to go smoke a bowl?” “I have a bowl loaded in my pipe.”

Broccoli

In the age of censorship, stoners always find a way to code their lingo. Broccoli is a code word for cannabis. On social media, someone might use the broccoli Emoji to hint at their cannabis consumption.

Bud

Bud is another name for weed. It is also a term for actual cannabis flower – typically the bigger, nicer weed you get in jars. Ex: “I don’t want any shake or small nugs, only the big buds like in the jars over there.”

Budder

This is a type of cannabis concentrate made from dry-cured cannabis flower using butane as a solvent. Budder describes the consistency of the wax – its consistency is similar to butter, but “budder” utilizes a pun for “bud.”

Budtender

When you go to a bar, you have a bartender; when you go to a dispensary, you have a budtender. This is a common term in the wake of cannabis legalization to describe employees at a dispensary.

Butane

Butane is a highly flammable, colorless, easily liquefied gas that quickly vaporizes at room temperature and is used for filling up your torch for dabbing. Butane is also used as a solvent for extracting resin, shatter, budder, badder, and other cannabis concentrates.

Cannabinoid Receptors

Cannabinoid receptors, located throughout the body, are part of the endocannabinoid system, which is meant to receive cannabinoids. These receptors handle physiological processes including appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory. These receptors are impacted by cannabinoids when you consume cannabis.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are compounds that are found within the cannabis plant that can interact with the endocannabinoid system. This is the system built into every human body to receive cannabinoids and use them to produce potentially holistic and therapeutic effects.

Cannabis

The scientific name for marijuana, AKA ganja, weed, pot, devil’s lettuce, etc. Cannabis has become the preferred term of the cannabis industry to describe the plant.

Cannabutter

Cannabutter is a popular way to make weed-infused edibles at home because of how simple it is to make. Once the cannabutter is made, it can be used in recipes for baked goods and other foods to turn anything into an edible!

How to make cannabutter:

  • Start with collecting your cannabis. You can use ground flower, or if you have a 3-chamber grinder, you can use the kief that collects in the bottom chamber!
  • Decarb your cannabis. To decarb, you will put a layer of parchment paper on a cookie sheet, and put your weed on the parchment paper. Bake at 245 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes, mixing every 10-15 minutes to make sure it doesn’t brown it.
  • Melt a stick of butter on the stove – or two, if you’re making a larger batch or want to stretch your edibles further.
  • Once it’s melted, add your decarbed weed. Simmer it on low heat for 1-2 hours.
  • Strain your mixture to remove the cannabis particles – or you can leave them in, if you’re looking for a weedier taste.
  • Pour into desired container and refrigerate.
  • Substitute regular butter for cannabutter in your favorite recipes for an infused kick to any food!

Carb

A carb is an extra hole on a pipe, bubbler, or bong that allows you to clear excess smoke from the chamber after smoking.

Carb Cap

When dabbing cannabis concentrates, a carb cap is used to cover the top of your banger to tighten the airflow and stop any smoke from escaping out of your bowl.

Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene is a terpene that’s present in many herbs and spices, including black pepper, basil, and oregano. Cannabis strains with high levels of it will be spicy, funky, and warmth to the nose, similar to cinnamon and cloves. Caryophyllene is the only terpene that can interact with our CB2 cannabinoid receptor to potentially produce anti-inflammatory effects.

Cashed

Cashed is a term for when a bowl of weed has been emptied. You might say “I just cashed the bowl. Let me load another one.”

CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive oil derived from the cannabis plant. Possible health benefits include reducing inflammation and pain.

CBN

Cannabinol (CBN) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in trace amounts of Cannabis. Think of it as a weaker form of THC. CBN is mostly found in cannabis that is aged and stored. CBN is derived from the plant's main psychoactive chemical, tetrahydrocannabinol.

Cheech & Chong

Cheech & Chong are a cannabis-friendly comedy duo consisting of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. The duo found commercial and cultural success in the 1970s and 1980s with their stand-up routines, studio recordings, and feature films. Many of these films were based on the hippie and free love era, and especially drug and counterculture movements, most notably their love for cannabis. Today they stand as cannabis brand owners and cultural icons.

Cherry

A cherry is when the bowl you’re smoking remains lit on its own. People may use the term “cherried” to refer to a bowl of weed that’s staying lit on its own. A cherry may also refer to the lit end of a joint or blunt.

Concentrates

Cannabis can be refined down to a concentrate that is brimming with cannabinoids and terpenes. There are various methods to do this involving either a solvent such as CO2 or butane, or simply using heat and pressure to produce hash.

Cone

A cone refers to a pre-rolled joint tube that’s able to be filled with your favorite weed. Cones have become a popular way for people that don’t prefer rolling to quickly fill a joint and smoke it. Sesh carries a number of cones made from hemp, rice, and brown paper that are perfect for putting your finest ganja into.

Cotton Mouth

An expression for when your mouth is as dry as a desert. After smoking several bowls of weed you might find yourself with cotton mouth and in need of a beverage.

Couchlock

Couchlock is a term for when you’re so high that you’ve become glued to the couch. Several potent indica and hybrid cannabis strains might give you a serious case of couchlock if you smoke too much. Netflix and Chill often goes hand-in-hand with a heavy couchlock scenario.

Crossfaded

Traditionally, crossfaded means that you’ve become intoxicated off both weed and alcohol.

Crumble

Crumble is a type of cannabis concentrate that comes from a hydrocarbon extraction. The term crumble refers to the consistency of the concentrate, which is usually dry and crumbly.

Crutch

Another name for the filter at the end of a joint, pre-roll, or blunt. Crutches, aka tips, have evolved to include wood and glass options beyond your typical wax paper.

Dab Rig

A dab rig is a typically glass device with a water chamber that is meant for vaporizing cannabis concentrates. This is typically done by applying massive amounts of heat to a quartz banger on the piece that you drop a piece of concentrate into at the appropriate temperature.

Dabs

Dabs refer to cannabis concentrates. You might say “let’s take a dab,” or “let’s go pick up some dabs.”

Decarboxylation, aka decarbing

Decarboxylation, aka decarbing, is basically the act of activating raw cannabis to release its potentially potent effects. This can be done by combustion, such as lighting weed with a flame, or through vaporization at a specific temperature. You can also cook cannabis at lower temperatures to decarboxylate it, thus making it ready for turning into edibles because the compounds that may cause the effects will have been activated.

Decriminalization

Decriminalization is the action or process of ceasing to treat something as illegal or as a criminal offense. People often refer to the need to decriminalize or “destigmatize” cannabis.

Diamonds (or Diamonds 'n Sauce)

Diamonds, or “Diamonds ‘n Sauce,” is a type of hydrocarbon extraction that uses fresh-frozen cannabis as the input. By keeping the cannabis frozen it retains high levels of cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenoids, resulting in a super potent extraction that can produce large delta-9 THCA diamonds. This process uses heat and pressure to form potent delta-9 THCA crystals beneath liquified terpenes. THCA is the precursor to THC that becomes activated using heat.

Dime Bags

A classic term referring to $10 worth of cannabis and/or a 1-gram bag of weed. You might pick up a dime bag from your dealer back in the day if you were strapped for cash and wanted to roll something up real quick.

Dispensary

Dispensary refers to retail locations where you’re able to purchase legal cannabis products. These can be either medically or recreational cannabis products.

Distillate

Distillate is a type of cannabis extraction that strips the plant matter of everything except pure THC. This method of extraction can produce super potent, clear THC distillate that may be used for making cannabis edibles or mixed with flavoring to create vape products. Distillate vapes can be flavored with either cannabis-derived or botanically derived terpenes.

Doobie

A doobie is a term referring to a joint or a rolled up marijuana cigarette. Popularized during the hippie era, you might smoke a fat doobie while listening to your favorite Grateful Dead records.

Dutch Treat

Dutch Treat is a legendary hybrid strain that comes from crossing Northern Lights with Haze. Smoking this strain might produce potent euphoric and uplifting cerebral effects that promote stress reduction and mental relaxation.

Edibles

Edibles refer to any food that has been infused with cannabis in any way. These days, cannabis edibles can be cookies, chocolates, gummies, beverages, mints, and more.

Entourage Effect

The Entourage Effect is a proposed idea that cannabis compounds other than tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can act synergistically with it to modulate the overall psychoactive effects of the plant. People believe that there are other cannabinoids present within the cannabis plant, including terpenes, that may contribute to the unique effects we experience between strains.

Extract

Extract refers to a cannabis concentrate. Cannabis can be extracted into a concentrated oil that is filled with terpenes, THC, and other potent cannabinoids.

Fatty

A fatty is usually a very large joint, pre-roll, or blunt. Someone might comment on a large joint you just rolled and say “wow, you rolled a fatty!”

Flower

In legal cannabis, the product category for weed is called flower. When you go into a dispensary you typically say you’re looking for some flower if you want to be directed to the jars of weed.

Fried

Fried means that you’re absolutely stoned. After roasting a fat blunt you might find yourself totally fried on the couch, deep in thought about what kind of munchies you want to get.

Full Spectrum

Full spectrum essentially means that a cannabis oil or product contains all the cannabinoids that are naturally occurring in the plant. There are many cannabinoids we still don’t know about, which may contribute more to the highs we experience between strains. Many people prefer full-spectrum edibles or oils because they might create a longer lasting high. The idea that cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenoids work together to create unique effects is called the Entourage Effect.

Ganja

Ganja is one of the oldest and most commonly used terms for weed in the English language. Its usage in English dates to before 1689. In Jamaica, this is the most common term for marijuana.

Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scout Cookies, aka GSC, is a world-famous indica-dominant hybrid strain that comes from crossing OG Kush with Durban Poison. The effects from this strain might be purely euphoric, followed by tantalizing waves of full-body relaxation.

Glass

Glass may denote any number of smoking pieces that are made of glass. You might refer to your bong, pipe, or even dab rig as your favorite glass.

Gorilla Glue

Gorilla Glue, aka Original Glue, aka GG4, is another notorious hybrid strain that might be very potent. It comes from crossing Chem’s Sister with Sour Dubb and Chocolate Diesel. Smoking some might produce a heavy-handed euphoria that resolves into utter relaxation, leaving you “glued” to the couch.

Greened Out

Playing off the colloquial term for drinking too much and “blacking out,” greened out is when you’ve smoked too much. This term is used to describe a situation where a person feels sick after smoking weed. They might go pale and start to sweat, feeling dizzy and nauseous, and possibly even vomiting.

Grinder

A grinder is one of the most useful tools in a smoker’s arsenal. Grinders can be made of plastic or metal and perform the task of breaking down your weed. Grinders are perfect for grounding up weed to put in a pre-roll, blunt, or bowl.

Hash

Hash is a concentrated form of cannabis created by pressing or rubbing together resin glands. It can come in all shapes and sizes, including balls, bricks, or even slabs. Hash is one of the oldest known forms of cannabis, with historical data dating back to the 12th century. Hash boasts several colorful appearances, including light brown to dark green.

Hashish

Hashish is the original name for hash. Hashish is a concentrate created by pressing or rubbing together resin glands with pressure, creating a shatter or chocolate bar-like shape.

Haze

Haze is a strain of cannabis originally cultivated out of California in the 1960s. Normally bred as a Sativa, it is also widely available as a hybrid strain as well. Haze is well known for its uplifting effects, able to lift anyone’s mood upon ingestion. It can help manage headaches, body pains, stress, and anxiety.

Head Shop

A smoke shop that sells glass pipes, bongs, bubblers, dab rigs, and usually vape products as well. These are not dispensaries and do not sell cannabis. However, you might be able to find CBD and hemp products.

Hemp

Hemp is the sister plant to cannabis – both from the cannabis sativa family, these two plants have many similarities. However, they have a few key differences as well. Hemp does not contain THC, and it does not contain any psychoactive properties.

Hit

Hit is what you say to someone when you want them to take a pull off whatever you’re smoking. “Take a hit,” or “here, hit this,” are all common smoking phrases during a sesh.

Hotbox

To hotbox a room you need to close off all pathways for the smoke to exit. You then smoke copious amounts of weed in the closed-off room, filling it with smoke. People call this a hotbox, or “hotboxing.”

Hybrid

A mix of both indica and sativa genes, hybrid strains have both of best worlds. There are three different types of hybrid strains: indica-dominant, sativa-dominant, and 50/50 mixes.

Icing

Another consistency of concentrate, icing is similar in texture to budder – the only real difference between the two is which one a brand might prefer to use.

Indica

Indica is one of the two types of weed in the world. Jokingly referred to as “in da couch”, it is known for giving calming, numbing, and sedating effects. Indica typically boasts strong physical effects upon consumption. Some of the most popular weeds in the world are indica dominant strains, including gorilla glue, grape ape, and blue cheese.

Jack Herer

Jack Herer was a cannabis advocate on the West Coast whose primary contribution to the history of legalization was his 1985 seminal tome criticizing the US government’s cannabis policies – The Emperor Wears No Clothes.

A potent sativa strain was named in his honor, and it is now one of the most popular and well-recognized strains available. This upbeat strain imparts effects including a clear-headed euphoria, a boost in creativity, and feelings of bliss.

Joint

Joints are one of the many ways that you can consume cannabis. Possibly one of the most accessible, joints are synonymous with cannabis. Marijuana is rolled into smoking papers and is typically fashioned with a filter. Other popular names for joints include doobies, pre-rolls, fatties, or spliffs.

Kief

Kief is the result of dried trichomes falling off the cannabis plant. It’s ultra-concentrated in THC and collects in the bottom chamber of a 3-chamber grinder. Learn more on our blog about it!

Kush

Typically sedative and heavy, kush is a variety of weed that originates from the Hindu Kush mountains. One of the most famous strands of weed, kush is pungent and one of a kind. Some popular strains built from kush include Hindu Kush, O.G. Kush, and Purple Kush.

Limonene

Limonene is a citrusy, fruity cannabis terpene produced within the flower's resin glands. Some of the most popular strains that have limonene are O.G. Kush, Sour Diesel, and Super Lemon Haze.

Live Resin

Live Resin is created through a unique technique. Harvested cannabis is frozen before and during the extraction process, which skips multiple steps. This allows the plants to be alive and kicking at the time of extraction.

Marijuana

Native to South and Central Asia, marijuana is a psychoactive herb used both recreationally and medically. The first documented history of marijuana dates back to 2800 BC, and it is still used daily by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Whoever smoked marijuana for the first time back in the 2800’s BC must have had a hell of a time. Nowadays, we call it weed, pot, ganja, cannabis, etc.

Mary Jane

A riff off the word marijuana, Mary Jane used to be used as a more discreet way to talk about our favorite plant. However, stoner culture has made the word more well-known and less discreet, so it is now used synonymously with marijuana, weed, cannabis, and pot.

Munchies

Munchies are the feeling of an insatiable appetite that can sometimes coincide with cannabis consumption. No matter how much you eat, you can never seem to fill your hunger. Munchies notoriously lead you to crave junk food such as Cheetos, Oreos, or anything sweet.

Myrcene

Myrcene is a common terpene found in cannabis. Also found in mangoes, lemongrass, and thyme myrcene has several benefits including stress relief, anxiety relief, insomnia relief, pain reduction, and an enhanced mood.

Oil

Oil is a form of cannabis that can be extracted from flower and hash. It has a large number of terpenes in a small amount of oil, typically leading to very high potency. It can be smoked with pens, dab rigs, or dripped into blunt rolls to pack an extra punch.

One-hitter

A one-hitter is a pipe typically made of glass intended for only one use (or inhale). There is a small bowl packed at the end of the pipe that can be lit and consumed with speed in mind.

Packing/Loading a Bowl

When smoking out of a bong or pipe you need to pack your ground weed into the 'bowl'. The bowl holds the weed, and when lit will siphon the smoke through your device and to you to ingest. Packing or loading the bowl is the verb for actually placing your weed into the bowl.

Papers

Papers are typically the material that weed is rolled into to create a joint, that are made of different materials, notably hemp papers, rice papers, and unrefined papers. Using Rolling papers is one of the most popular ways to smoke weed.

Pipe

A pipe is an instrument used to smoke weed. Typically small in size and easy to prepare, pipes are popular for on the go smoking. Many people’s first experience with smoking is with a pipe due to it’s easy accessibility.

Pot

Pot is another word for marijuana, often used in the 1970s and 80s. The word derives from the Spanish word “potaguaya” which translates to marijuana leaves.

Pothead

A pothead is someone who consumes a copious amount of marijuana, often habitually, and sometimes brings this into their personality as a whole.

Pre-Roll

A joint that has already been rolled up for your enjoyment. Typically, pre-rolls come wrapped in rice, hemp, or brown papers, avoiding any tobacco. Pre-rolls are pure weed.

Puff, puff, pass

Puff, puff, pass is an unspoken rule for sharing weed. When smoking a blunt or joint with other people, it is common courtesy to take at max two hits and pass it to the next person. This way you are not smoking all the weed, and everyone is sharing equally.

Re-up

To re-up is to stock up on more weed. Whenever you run out of bud you go to the dispensary to “re-up.”

Reefer

Traditionally, reefer is synonymous with joint and pre-roll. Nowadays, the cannabis industry has dubbed 98mm slim half-gram joints as reefers.

Resin

Resin is the dark and sticky substance that naturally forms the trichomes of weed buds. Resin holds the most cannabinoids (the stuff that gets you high) on the entire cannabis plant. It also produces kief by pulling apart these trichomes and separating the kief.

Resin often gets left behind when smoking out of a piece, and results in a dark, sticky, tar-like substance that can clog your bowl if you let it build up. It is smokable, but it is messy and often results in a headache due to the harshness. Most stoners only smoke resin as a last resort.

Rice Paper

Contrary to popular belief, rice paper is not actually made from rice.

In Europe in the 1900s, a paper-like substance was known as rice paper, due to the false assumption that it was made from rice. In reality, it was made from wood pulp, just like any other paper. After it was coined, Rice Paper as a term has stuck around and become known in the cannabis community because of the white hue of rolling papers.

Here at Sesh, our Refined White Rice Paper Cones are made from sustainably sourced paper procured from the world’s finest paper producers. Contrary to popular belief, these cones aren’t bleached; to get achieve the desired white color, we use the same plant matter used for our Natural Brown Cones, but the pulp is cleaned and refined further, so that less of the plant matter remains, no bleach or chlorine necessary!

Rick Simpson Oil (RSO)

Rick Simpson Oil, or RSO, is another form of high-potency cannabis extract that is usually dark in color with a thick consistency. It is commonly ingested orally, and is easy to add to any dish to turn anything into an edible.

Rick Simpson is the creator of the oil – in 2003, he was diagnosed with skin cancer. After he read a study from the National Cancer Institute about THC’s ability to kill cancer cells in mice, he wanted to treat his cancer with cannabis extract oil. After his recovery, he began to product the full-extract cannabis oil for those in need and became famous for it.

Rillo

Rillo is a shortened version of “cigarillo”, a popular cigar that is narrow in size. Traditionally, Rillos were popular due to the fact they were easily obtainable, and the tobacco inside can near effortlessly be replaced with cannabis to roll a blunt.

Nowadays, you can buy Rillos that aren’t tobacco-filled, and are ready to be filled with cannabis! Here at Sesh, we have hemp-wrap Rillos that feature a spiral filter tip. These are reminiscent of classic cigarillos in appearance and feel, but they don’t contain any tobacco and hit much smoother than tobacco blunts.

Rip

A rip is the same as a hit – “taking a rip off the bong,” or “that was a massive rip!” are some ways it might be used.

Roach

A roach is the last bit left after smoking a joint before you get to the filter. Some people save their roaches for a rainy day, and others would never consider smoking a roach.

Roach Clip

A roach clip is a clip that holds the base of your preroll so you can smoke it all the way to the filter without worrying about burning your fingers – similar to the cigarette clips that were popular in the 1900s.

Roasted

Roasted is another term for being baked, stoned, or blasted.

Rosin

Rosin is cannabis concentrate that has been extracted without the use of solvents or chemicals. Typically, rosin is made using heat and pressure. At the dispensary, you’ll find that rosin is more expensive than the other types of oil – this is because it is 100% pure cannabis, while other concentrates have solvents that add to the weight.

When you buy 1g of rosin, you are getting more cannabis than when you buy 1g of a solvent-based oil.

Sap

Another type of concentrate, sap is another form of cannabis concentrate that is extracted from the plant. This is a solvent-based concentrate, with butane and CO2 being common methods of extraction. Sap is less viscous than most other oils, having a consistency similar to tree sap.

SHO (Solventless Hash Oil)

Also known as rosin, Solventless Hash Oil is a cannabis extract made without the use of solvents at all, and instead utilizes heat and pressure for extraction – although ice extraction may be used as well. This is one of the purest forms of concentrate.

At the dispensary, you’ll find that SHO is more expensive than the other types of oil – this is because it is 100% pure cannabis, while other concentrates have solvents that add to the weight.

When you buy 1g of SHO, you are getting more cannabis than when you buy 1g of a solvent-based oil.

Spliff

Spliff is another word for a joint or pre-roll.

Sploof

A sploof is a smoke filter meant to disguise or hide the smell of your ganja when you smoke. There are many available for purchase online and in headshops, but there is a homemade sploof option that is budget-friendly and easy to make.

How to Make a Sploof:

  • Grab an empty toilet paper roll and some dryer sheets.
  • Fill the roll with dryer sheets.
  • Place one dryer sheet on the end of the roll, and use a rubber band to keep it in place.
  • After you take a hit, blow it through the open end of the roll so it goes through all of the dryer sheets. This works best for bongs or pipes, not so much for pre-rolls because they are constantly burning through the sesh.
  • Voila! No weed smell here!

Stash

A stash is someone’s collection of weed.

Stoned

When you are high as a kite and enjoying life, some would describe you as being stoned. You’re so high that you aren’t moving, like a stone statue.

Stoner

A stoner is similar to a pothead; someone who consumes a large amount of marijuana regularly.

Strain

A strain is a genetic variation of the cannabis plant.

Think about tomato plants as a comparison – there are so many types of tomatoes: bite-sized cherry tomatoes, oblong Roma tomatoes, plump beefsteak tomatoes, vibrant Cherokee purple tomatoes…the list goes on! Each of these variants is a little different from its counterparts, from the size of the fruit to the size of the plant and the growing period needed. These have different genetics and have each been bred to produce the desired fruit size, shape, color, and taste.

Cannabis is very similar! Different strains have been bred to have different effects, terpenes, and appearance. Not all weed looks, tastes, or even smells the same! Durban Poison, Granddaddy Purple, Jack Herer, and Alaskan Thunderfuck are all examples of different strains of weed.

T-break

Also known as a Tolerance Break, t-breaks are needed every now and then to bring your tolerance down. Many users will find that their tolerance increases as they use cannabis, and the best way to reset your tolerance is to take a break. A t-break can last days, weeks, or even months.

Wake n Bake

A wake n bake session is a smoke sesh that takes place first thing in the morning after someone wakes up. They wake, and they get baked!

Weed

Weed is a possible shorthand version of the word “locoweed,” which is a noxious plant that grows in southwest and northern Mexico. If ingested by cattle or horses, it had bad effects on them. Locoweed was sometimes used interchangeably with the word marijuana in the late 19th century in Mexico, so as stories about marijuana made their way to the US, the two plants became conflated.

A California bill in 1913 aimed to criminalize the cultivation of cannabis, and it referred to the plant as “locoweed.” Nowadays, “weed” is one of the most common ways to reference cannabis and is synonymous with pot, marijuana, Mary Jane, ganja, etc.

Yammed

As stoner Facebook groups have grown in popularity, the increased censorship on the platform has many groups coming up with creative ways to reference cannabis and being high in order to avoid being muted for going against community standards. One of the unique ways to reference being high became “I yam” with a yam or sweet emoji as a discreet way to say, “I am high.” Eventually, this became a regular reference in these groups, morphing into a verb as many coined the term “yammed” to mean the same as baked, stoned, roasted, etc.

Here at Sesh, we are dedicated to providing you with not only the highest quality smoking accessories like grinders and pre-rolled cones, we also prioritize education surrounding cannabis and its many uses.
