Nothing smokes like a blunt. Rich, flavorful, slow-burning and heavy-hitting; there’s a reason that the blunt has been one of the cornerstones of cannabis culture for decades.

But as good as a blunt is, it can still be better. Adding a premium wood, glass or ceramic filter tip to your roll is a guaranteed way to take your blunt session to the next level. "How?" you ask, and I am so glad you did.

Do You Need a Filter for a Blunt?

Let’s start at the very beginning: Do you really need a filter for a blunt?

Well, "need" is a strong word. But the answer is no, you don’t need one. A blunt is a classic for a reason. It does its job well whether there is a filter in there or not.

But do you need ketchup for your french fries? Of course not, but it makes them better. A filter for your blunt works the same way.

Not only does a premium filter tip keep the blunt wrap from getting soggy and your lips from potentially getting resin on them, using a filter helps block any particles, or “scooby snacks” from getting through while you are smoking, AND it helps further cool the smoke so you can take even bigger hits.

A filter tip elevates any smoking experience. Try it, and you won’t go back.

How To Make a Filter for a Blunt

Filter Blunts Pre-Roll

So once you’ve decided to take your blunt game to the next level, it’s time to learn how to make a blunt filter.

While we, of course, recommend using a premium filter tip like wood, glass or ceramic, but if you don’t have any of our DaySavers tips hanging around, even a simple paper crutch can make a difference.

If you have a book of rolling papers that comes with built-in filters, just pull off one of those. If not, find a small piece of card stock, like an index card or a magazine subscription card, and cut out a small rectangle.

Start by folding over a small piece, then flip your filter and fold it the other way. Then repeat that one more time and then roll the rest. This will create a classic "w" style filter tip that you can place at one end of your blunt prior to rolling and sealing.

You can also create a spiral paper filter tip by spinning the paper into a spiral tube that will also protect and cool during the smoking experience. If you’re looking for increased structure and a thicker filter, use a second paper to roll a spiral around the first tip you’ve made without closing off airflow that will be needed for strong pulls.

How to Roll a Blunt with a Filter

Filter Blunts Pre-Roll

Rolling a blunt is art unto itself. It takes skill and practice to perfect, but is absolutely worth the time you put into it.

Thankfully, adding a filter tip to your blunt is an easy addition.

Prepare your wrap and flower as normal. Whatever your preferred blunt wrap is, whether a traditional tobacco leaf, hemp wrap, or flavored wrap, lay it flat on a clean surface and gently run your fingers over it to smooth any wrinkles or creases. Next, grind your flower to a medium consistency.

Now select a filter tip. If you are using paper, get it prepped; otherwise pick your favorite premium filter tip. Natural Wood Tips have a traditional feel on the lips, while Flavored Wood Tips provide the same feel, but with a hint of sugar or vanilla flavor that stays on your lips instead of getting in the way of your flower. For an easy upgrade, grade some premium glass tips or luxurious ceramic filter tips. The smooth feel and natural cooling properties will elevate any session, plus, you can clean and reuse them for future blunt circles.

As you add the flower to your wrap, place your filter tip at one end, leaving half of it outside the wrap. To seal the filter in place, you can add a little moisture to your wrap before rolling and it will stick to the filter tips, particularly the glass and ceramic filter tips.

Make sure your cannabis is equally distributed among the reminder of the wrap. Be careful to add the right amount into the roll so that when you begin to shape your blunt, there is enough flower so your filter does not bulge out on one end. You wouldn’t want the filter to be the thickest portion of your blunt.

Now, using your thumbs and index fingers, gently roll the cannabis into a cylindrical form, ensuring it's evenly distributed from end to end. Starting from the filter end, tightly roll the wrap around the tip, tucking in the edge to create a neat, tight and uniform shape throughout the rest of your blunt. Continue the tuck and seal throughout the rest of your blunt from filter-end to open-end.

Once you've rolled the wrap completely, moisten the exposed edge slightly with saliva or water to help seal the blunt. Use your fingers or packing stick to press down along the seam, ensuring it's tightly sealed to prevent air pockets or loose ends. Trim any excess wrap and use a lighter to heat-seal the ends.

Again, this takes a little practice and adding in a filter tip can throw off even the most seasoned blunt rollers. But don’t give up; we promise, the premium filter tip experience makes it all worth it in the end.
