How to Roll a Hemp Wrap Blunt

Rolling a blunt is not the easiest thing in the world. Even if you’re an old school master of splitting and rolling a cigarillo leaf, rolling a hemp wrap blunt has its own tip-ups that can slow you down.

It’s one of the reasons Fill-a Blunts makes 1-gram and 2-gram pre-rolled hemp wrap blunt tubes, to be honest.

But for some people the ritual is just as important as the smoke itself and in those cases, rolling it up makes a difference. There’s a certain pleasure in rolling and smoking your own blunt, and a sense of accomplishment since, as I noted, it’s not necessarily easy.

In the modern world, most of us forgo the traditional cigar or tobacco leaf – with its myriad unhealthy aspects, like nicotine – for a hemp wrap. They come natural or flavored and are always cut to the perfect size for a blunt.

So what is a hemp wrap blunt and how do you roll one?

Let’s do it.

What are Blunt Wraps?

Traditionally rolled using the outer leaf of a “blunt” size cigar – usually a relatively cheap machine rolled smoke that uses a single outer leaf instead of multiple leaves rolled together as in other sizes – the blunt grew to popularity in the 1990s, particularly on the East Coast after hip hop artists like Redman, Nas and members of the Wu-Tang Clan adopted the blunt as a go-to smoking method.

Larger, richer in flavor and slower burning than a typical joint, the blunt became a legendary staple in the underground cannabis community.

Today, while some of us still split a Dutchie or Phillie and dump the insides to get a wrap, companies have learned to capitalize on the trend, selling Blunt Wraps – just the bit you’re going to use to roll a blunt – instead of an entire cigar you’re just going to throw away anyway.

Though with smoking tobacco falling further and further out of style as time goes on, blunt wraps these days are not just tobacco leaves. Companies have started selling everything from tea leaves to palm leaves to even herbal or fruit-based wraps.

They tend to be the same size as the type of cigarillos that have become the main go-to for blunt rollers since the tobacco industry realized they were out there, and usually hold between 1- and 3-grams of flower, depending on particle size, moisture content and how tight you roll that bad boy.

And the most common non-tobacco blunt wrap on the market is the hemp wrap.

Why You Shouldn’t Smoke Palm Leaf Blunts

Not all blunt wraps are created equal and not all leaves are good to smoke.

For example, one of the most popular alternate blunt wraps or blunt tubes on the market is the palm leaf blunt wrap. Palm leaf wraps are made with the leaves of the Tendu or Cordia tree, both of which grow naturally in tropical environments.

Since palm leaf blunts and palm leaf wraps are made from natural leaves and materials, they can contain unsafe levels of heavy metals, pesticides and/or mold. The heavy metals come from the soil these palm-style leaves grow in and the pesticides are sprayed directly on these crops or drift from nearby farms.

In 2022, the Colorado Medical Enforcement Division issued a recall for several palm leaf blunt products, which were found to contain unsafe mold and yeast levels. That came on the heels of a 2021 report from California-based SC Labs that found several rolling paper and palm wrap brands failing testing for pesticides.

DaySavers has been unable to continuously source clean palm products, which is why we don’t carry them. Obviously, not all palm leaf wraps are unsafe, but we say why risk it? Grab a hemp wrap and be confident, instead.

What are Hemp Wraps?

A marvel of the modern cannabis economy, the hemp wrap is simply a blunt wrap made from hemp. Usually brownish in color to resemble traditional tobacco leaf wraps, hemp wraps have a mild flavor that naturally pairs well with your weed and, generally, has the traditional slow burn of a cigar leaf.

Not to be confused with hemp rolling paper – like in our mini tower boxes, for example – hemp wraps are made with less refined hemp fibers, so they retain more of their natural color, texture and flavor.

Instead, the fibers harvested from the hemp plant are turned to pulp but left thicker than those for paper or rolling paper. When pressed into sheets, the result is a thicker, more cigar-like hemp paper that burns slower and has a natural, earthy flavor, and always nicotine- and THC-free.

Why Choose a Hemp Wrap Over Traditional Blunt Wraps?

The main reason for choosing a hemp wrap over a traditional blunt wrap is health concerns.

We’re not going to say hemp wraps are, you know, good for you or anything, but they certainly don’t contain any of the nicotine or other harmful chemicals found in cured tobacco leaves.

Hemp wraps can also be cheaper. Aside from that, they take to flavorings and infusions better than tobacco leaves, so if you’re looking for a unique taste experience, hemp is the way to go.

What You’ll Need to Roll a Hemp Wrap Blunt

OK, now it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty. Here’s what you need to grab:

Got everything? Alright, here we go.

How to Roll a Hemp Wrap Blunt – Step by Step

First, grind your weed. Remember, It All Starts With the Grind. I like to use a Flower Mill with a No. 3 Medium or No. 4 Course screen when I am rolling blunts. The mill creates a fluffier grind than a traditional toothed grinder and helps keep wrap-piercing stems out of my rolling tray, and the No. 3 or No. 4 plate allows for larger particle sizes (don’t worry, we’ll squish those down) as well as smaller particles that fall though, which we will need to help even everything out.

Next, remove your hemp wrap from its packaging and lay it out flat on your rolling tray. If it comes rolled on a plastic tube or with some other material to separate it from other wraps, be sure to remove the divider, leaving just the hemp wrap.

Now place your weed on top of your hemp wrap. I pile it along the center, making it as level as possible all the way through the wrap. The goal here is to make sure there’s a consistent amount of weed all the way through your blunt, so that hot spots don’t form since those can lead to canoeing. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just close. And you’re going to want to use just a little more than you think here, as some will undoubtedly fall out and back onto your rolling tray.

Now pick up the hemp wrap, grabbing both of the long side between your fingers and lifting so the weed rests in the bottom of the U shape. With the long sides matched and level, use your thumb to begin gently raising and lowering each side in turn. This will help roll the weed into a log, and you can use your thumbs on the downstroke to add additional pressure to the roll.

When you are satisfied with the density of your weed log, use your thumbs to roll the front half of the hemp wrap almost all the way down and tuck it over the top the log. Now, continue to use your thumbs to roll the log part up, tightening the back half as it rolls.

Keep even pressure throughout the process, rolling back and forth if you have to get the proper tuck.

It is much like you would roll a joint, just longer. I think of this motion like a typewriter pulling paper under, but that might be a wasted reference if your grandmother isn’t as old as mine...

Keep rolling the main log of weed up until only a small strip remains and then either wet the strip or smear a thin line of your food-safe glue along it.

Now, at this point, if you have the dexterity or you are on the go, feel free to keep rolling and sealing it with your fingers. Or, simply place the mostly rolled blunt on your rolling tray and finish it using both hands and the surface of the tray to create an even roll and seal.

There are people who will tell you this method is cheating, and if you are on a street corner in the Bronx or South Philly, you may get some grief for this. But the fact is that a blunt is basically a weed cigar and if you watch any professional cigar roller at work – like my man Ramon, who used to sit outside the Island Cigar Company on Duvall Street in Key West – they always use a flat surface when rolling world class cigars. Why not do the same for your blunts?

Now give a little more moisture to make sure it’s fully sealed, toast it with a lighter if it’s a little wet (this will cinch up the fibers in the hemp wrap as well, tightening your roll) and it’s ready to smoke.

At this point, I tend to put my blunt in the freezer for a minute or two. The dry cold of a freezer also helps tighten it all down. I think. To be honest, I don’t actually know but my buddy Da Guru always put his blunts in the freezer and they were the best I ever smoked, so now do I do that too? Yessir, yessir, yessir.

Finally, light that sucker up.

How to Roll a Hemp Wrap with No Glue

Most hemp wraps do not really require glue. In fact, a simple lick of the hemp wrap is often all it takes to get it to stay together.

If you’re not comfortable licking the wrap, just dip your fingers in a little water and spread it on the wrap that way.

That said, if that’s not working for you or your hemp wraps just don’t seem to want to stick, you can make your own “glue” at home with just a little honey and water. You don’t need much of either. The water is just to dilute the honey and make it more spreadable. Then, it evaporates quicker, and the natural stickiness of the honey will hold your blunt together.

(This will also work for traditional cigarillo or fronto leaf blunts, by the way...)

Common Issues and Fixes for Rolling Hemp Wrap Blunts

The two most common issues you are most likely going to face are tearing your wrap or having problems sealing your hemp wrap blunt.

The first issue, tearing, is best addressed by simply being careful. Be careful to remove stem chunks from your grind so they don’t poke through. But also, be careful while you are manipulating the blunt wrap. Take your time, it’s not a race. Be smooth and deliberate in your motions so you keep things even, you’ll get fewer tears.

If you do tear the wrap, judge how far along you are in the process. If it’s early enough of a bad tear, just grab a new hemp wrap and start again. If you are halfway through and get a tear, see if the torn part will be overlapped by the other side of the wrap, covering the hole. If it is not covered, or you are too far along, you can tear small pieces of another wrap (they are not usually sold individually) and use them as patches, sticking them over the torn section with either your glue, a little water or a quick lick.

If you are having problems sealing your wrap, try some glue or the homemade honey/water trick. The honey adds a nice taste as well.

Finally, watch out for adding moisture too early as well as some hemp wraps have tendency to really stick together before you want to. If this happens, try to peel them apart, but the truth is, you might have to reach for another wrap and start the process again.

Pre-Rolled Hemp Wrap Blunts

Simple, right? Well, the truth is it is not as easy as it reads. It’s not hard, but it does take some practice and some patience, not to mention the space to roll up.

But if you are on the go, in a hurry or just don’t want to take the time to roll up yourself, there are always pre-rolled blunt cones and pre-rolled blunt tubes, which have the added bonus of premium filter tips to help block particles and cool the smoke so you can take bigger, smoother hits.

At DaySavers, we have special 1 ¼ size hybrid hemp wrap artisan tubes with a spiral filter in both green and pink that deliver the same slow burn, but in a pre-rolled tube the size of a cigarette that fits easily on the Perfect Pack, so you can pack it in seconds. The hybrid hemp wrap is specially designed to deliver the taste and feel of classic hemp, but won’t dry out and get brittle like a standard hemp wrap.
