How to Use a Blunt Roller

There's nothing quite like rolling up your own blunt; feeling that perfectly chosen flower compress beneath your fingers into a perfect, smokeable leaf-wrapped log that's going to keep the circle rocking for a deep sesh.

But rolling a blunt by hand is not easy. It's more art than craft sometimes and takes practice and patience to get right. Getting it packed evenly, keeping the wrap from tearing, and landing a tight, even burn? That's a skill that can take years to truly dial in.

Add in the squad is waiting to spark and watching your every move, and the spotlight can make it even trickier.

This is where we'd usually just point out that you can always just grab a pack of Fill-a Blunts pre-rolled hemp wrap tubes with your choice of filter tip and simply pack up your favorite flower instead of trying to roll, but we get it: sometimes you feel the Old School calling.

That's where a blunt roller comes in. A blunt roller is a shortcut past the whole learning curve. Load it right, and you get a consistent, practiced-looking roll in a fraction of the time, every time.

But a blunt roller, and its oddly fluid mechanics, can seem intimidating if you haven't used one before. I mean, how exactly do you use a blunt roller?

What is a Blunt Roller?

So you might be thinking "a blunt roller? You mean like the woman Snoop hired to roll him 80 a day?" I mean, that would work, but no, that's not quite what we're getting at.

A blunt roller is a small, simple handheld device that does the physical work of rolling for you. Instead of shaping the wrap, packing the material and sealing everything by feel, you load your wrap and your ground flower into the blunt roller and it compresses everything into a firm, evenly rolled cylinder for you, easy peasy.

Quite simply, a blunt roller removes the guesswork. Hand-rolling is a real skill, and even pros get the occasional lopsided or loosely packed roll. But with a blunt roller, every blunt comes out packed to the same density and rolled to the same tightness, delivering an even burn and a smooth draw every time.

It's also just faster, which matters whether you're rolling one for yourself or rolling several at once.

There are two major types of blunt rollers though, the crank style and hand press. Both use a loose rubber sheet to hold and shape the flower, but they use different mechanisms to get it done.

The crank style roller, like the Tumbleweed Joint and Blunt Roller, uses a built-in rod to shape the flower and wrap it with a single motion, while a hand press, like the Deuce Blunt Roller takes a little more work to shape and feed in the wrap by hand, but provides a bit more leeway for size.

But don't worry, both rollers will get that blunt rolled for you, it's just a slightly different process depending on the machine.

How to Roll a Blunt with a Crank Style Roller

Let's first go with the Tumbleweed, a beautiful, efficient little machine made of mahogany and brass.

And like any time you are making a pre-roll or joint at home, it all starts with the grind. Give your favorite flower a good grind with your favorite grinder – we, of course, prefer non-toothed grinder because they do a better job keeping your cannabinoids and terpenes intact and your bud fluffy – and then grab your Tumbleweed.

Set your roller in front of you with the brass strip at the top away from your body. To begin, make sure the rod is all the way at the top, with the rolling surface tucked down to form a little canal or trough.

Now, load about a gram of flower into the trough. Try and load it evenly across the whole opening, but don't overload the trough. This will take a few tries to get right at first, but you'll quickly develop a feel for it.

You can also add a filter tip at this point. Just place it all the way to one end and then load the flower next to it.

With your flower loaded into the roller, slowly begin to pull the rod forward, closing the gap. Once you've closed the gap, pull it just a bit further toward you. This will begin to shape the flower into a tube and create a two-layered look on the rolling machine, with the back being slightly higher than the front.

Next, lay your wrap flat along the rolling surface, parallel to the rod. Tuck one end of your wrap under the lip of the roller (if you are using rolling paper, place the paper so the gum line is toward you and facing up).

Then just slowly continue to pull the rod forward. It will pull in your wrap and wind it around your tube of flower. Just before the end of the wrap is pulled in, moisten it, like you would a gum line on a rolling paper and then finish pulling the rod to the front of the blunt roller.

Your rolled blunt should pop out right in front of you, ready to smoke!

How to Roll a Blunt with a Hand Press Roller

A hand press roller works in a similar way, but, honestly, it's a bit trickier and takes a bit more manual manipulation and practice, but it does give a wider range of size options.

Once again, it all starts with the grind, so grind up your favorite flower with your favorite non-toothed grinder to get it prepped.

Next, place your Deuce Blunt Roller in front of you and use the selection knob on the side to choose the width you'd like your blunt to be. The smallest setting will use a little under a gram of flower. The widest is going to roll you a cigar-sized monster. So choose wisely.

Once you've selected your width, tighten the screw to lock it in place.

First, separate the two rollers at the top. If you look at the roller, you will see that though it looks symmetrical, one of the two rollers moves on a small track carved along the sides. You're going to want that side toward you, with the roller at its widest to begin.

Now, push down the rolling surface between the two rollers to create a trough and load your ground flower in, then gently bring the rollers together to close the trough. Any flower that does not fit in the space is going to overflow at this point, so it makes sense to do this all over a rolling tray.

This is also the time to load a premium filter tip into one side of the roller. Like with the Tumbleweed, put your filter tip all the way to one side and begin packing the flower next to it. You may also have to adjust your roller depth here, depending on whether you are using a 9mm filter tip or a larger 11mm filter tip.

Once you've loaded your flower and brought the rollers together, begin gently rolling them away from you. You will need to roll them together. The rolling surface will move independently, rolling the flower inside into a log.

Next, line up your blunt wrap between the two closed rollers. Tuck it in between if you can. It doesn't have to be too deep, just enough for the rubber rollers to be able to grab it.

Now, roll the two rollers away from you again. This should begin to pull the blunt wrap into the machine, slowly wrapping it tightly around your flower. Before the wrap disappears completely, moisten the lip and then roll it down into the roller.

Give a few more rolls just to tighten it down and then move the front roller back into the open position. Your fully rolled blunt will pop out, ready to light!

Again, this may take a try or two to get the feel for – particularly adding the wrap – but don't worry, you'll get the feel for it very quickly.
